Injuries from Falling

emergency hospitalWe all fall at some point in our lives, whether it is from tripping on a curb, slipping on rainy pavement, or losing our balance on an uneven surface.

In the best-case scenario, we just get back up again, but unfortunately, it’s not always that simple. In fact, injuries from falls are quite common, leading to almost 9 million emergency department visits per year.

More Common, Higher Risk

For adults, falls start to become more common after the age of 65. This is when people tend to experience worsened balance, decreased muscular tone, increased side effects from medication, chronic pain, and decreased vision. Additionally, for those in this age group, falls more frequently result in injuries. This is because as we age and become less active, bone density decreases, which makes us more prone to fractures.

Here at Orthopedic Specialists of Seattle, we most commonly see broken bones (fractures) and joint injuries, such as sprains and dislocations, from falls. Something important to keep in mind: falling once as an adult over 65, doubles your chance of falling again.
